11.5 Million WoW Players

By Grim

So there you have it, WoW has broken the 11 Million barrier.  This jump in total subscriptions is directly due to Wrath of the Lich King.

Its hardly surprising given the fact Wrath sold more than 2.8 million copies in the first 24 hours of going on sale.  Breaking the all time PC sales record.

“We’re pleased to welcome the new and returning players who have helped World of Warcraft reach these new milestones, and we appreciate the enthusiasm and support that the game’s global community has continued to show,”

Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard.

Not only is Wrath selling well (since its launch the player base has increased by 4 million!), but in the US the Battle Chest versions of WoW are enjoying increased sales also.  This is a fantastic time to be playing WoW and from what I can tell the player base will only continue to grow.

This really comes as no surprise to me. Gamestop had their Black Friday sale, where WoW battle-chest was half off = $20 bucks. I took the chance to nab a copy of WoW (with BC) of my daughter, who earned me a free month by creating the account, making my total out of pocket for Battle Chest = $5. Considering how packed the store was in my small, out-of-the way town, I can’t imagine how busy Game Stops in major cities were and how many Battle Chests left the stores in other smart shopper hands. I even got an extra Battle Chest just in case I ever wanted to RAF some alts up or give the game to friend/relative.
